And theres more....

The Enchanted Circle offers a wealth of kid-friendly activities; for the older child summer brings float trips on the Rio Grande, horseback riding in a variety of locations, ATV rides, chair lift excursions into the mountains, hiking or cycling, a first fly-fishing lesson, even a trip in a hot air balloon with mom and dad.  In winter there are numerous places for shredding on snowboards, snow tubing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and even a moonlight sled ride into the mountains.  Information on all these activities is available elsewhere on this website.

But there’s just as much for the younger set to do!

In Taos there are so many things to experience…

Twirl

Your Number One source to begin your exploration of Taos and all it offers for your family is twirl.  A truly magical place to explore, shop or play for children of all ages, twirl is the kid resource in Taos.  They offer a terrific outdoor courtyard play space decorated for the season with lots of things to experience, and a delightful shop that appeals to the wonders of childhood – safe and simply made quality toys, crafts and supplies for the budding young artist or engineer, and plenty of helpful advice from their staff of experts – 5 very “in the know” moms.  Their website is the most comprehensive resource for kid-friendly activities in Taos, whether museum, craft or athletic programs.  Contact them at www.twirlhouse.com or 575-751-1402.  They are located in the heart of the Historic District at 225 Camino de la Placita.

Kit Carson Park

Kit Carson Park and Historic Cemetery is located 1 ½ blocks north of Taos Plaza at 211 Paseo Del Pueblo Norte. This 19 acre park features a ¾ mile walking and jogging track around the pe

rimeter. The park provides multipurpose courts for tennis and basketball as well as three baseball fields. There are also large open fields suitable for soccer, frisbee and just relaxing. Kit Carson Park also has a playground for children ages 2–12 as well as ample picnic and barbecue areas throughout the park.  Kit Carson Cemetery is over 150 years old and is the final resting place of Kit Carson, Padre Martinez Governor Bent, Mabel Dodge Luhan and other prominent Taoseños. The cemetery and park are both ADA accessible.  Amenities include a walking/jogging trail, two fields for soccer practice, two little league ball fields, one t-ball field, one picnic shelter, a bandstand, several picnic areas, basketball court, and a tennis court.  Hours: 7:00 AM to 8 PM daily during the summer.

Llama Treks

For a truly unique day in the beautiful wilderness of Northern New Mexico, why not “take a llama to lunch” with the kids?   Wild Earth Llama Adventures offers everything from guided pack trips to gourmet lunch day hikes and custom wilderness experiences in the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Taos.  Their experienced guides and “lovable llamas” will help you experience the wilderness adventure of a lifetime.  The llamas carry the gear – and your lunch – leaving your mind, body and spirit free to enjoy the day and children as young as 6 can be part of the fun.  The calm demeanor of these animals will make you want to take one home.  Visit www.llamaadventures,com or 1-800-758-LAMA for more information and reservations. Daily during the summer.

Taos Spa and Tennis Club

Not just for grownups!  You can take advantage of day passes available at this full service Spa or you may find them offered at a discount through your hotel.  And while you are enjoying your workout, take advantage of our Kids Club with its convenient supervised child care service available to members while at the club. Our friendly qualified childcare attendants can

care for your child in a clean and safe environment while you enjoy your workout. Hours are 9 am to 12 noon and 4 – 7 pm Monday through Friday; 8 am to 12 noon Saturdays.  Swimming  Kids can enjoy the outdoor pool when it is open (Memorial Day through Labor Day) and the indoor pool during Family Swim periods (Saturdays & Sundays 12 to 3 pm). Swim Lessons The club offers private, semi private and group lessons for kids. Swimming is great exercise and a skill your kids will use all their lives.

Youth and Family Center

 Taos Youth and Family Center

Find all the activities you want for your older kids at the Taos Youth and Family Center!  From our world class Olympic pool to the skateboard park and roller rink to the outdoor climbing structure, we have plenty to keep them occupied.  In addition to our pool tables, video games and snack bar, we also have a wide range of structured activities that change daily.  Contact the Center at www.taosyouth.com or call at 575-758-4160.

For a nearby side trip that’s totally family-oriented, including special ‘theme rides’, try …

The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railway

Just a one hour drive west and north of Taos in Antonito, CO you’ll find a remnant of the old Denver and Rio Grande narrow gauge railroad system – a step back in time on a steam-driven locomotive that will give you and the kids a lifetime of memories.  The route takes you through scenic territory that is still largely untouched and unpopulated, and passes through several “ghost stops” along the way.  A national historic site, it is called “one of the best 20 railway experiences in the world” by the Society of International Rail Travelers.  On Thursdays during the summer, the “Cinder Express” offers a shorter trip designed with children in mind.  A hearty lunch is included in the fare.  They can be reached for reservations at 800-286-2737 or online at www.cumbrestoltec.com.  Advance reservations recommended during busy summer months.
